Drone recorded 64,000 turtles in the Great Barrier Reef

An impressive video has gone viral on the internet in the last days. In a new pioneering way, researchers were able to measure the population of green sea turtles on an island in the Great Barrier Reef.

Specifically, scientists from the Raine Island Recovery Project, recruiting drones and painting with white — non-toxic — paint part of the adult turtle shell, were able to determine the number of these animals that take refuge on the island at 64,000.

According to the Guardian, this number may be 1.73 times higher than previous estimates.
